The origins of February
The origins of February come from Latin februo that means purification. The Roman calendar started in March, so the month before people were purifying themselves to be ready for the new year.
Later on, the Romans dedicated February to Febris, the goddess of fever and healing. To this tradition refers also the Catholic Church venerating Saint Valentine, on February 14th.
Moreover, on February 2nd there is a popular celebration, Candelora. A Venetian proverb says “Candelora, Candelora, dell’inverno semo fora“, meaning that once it’s February 2nd, the winter is over!
